Andrea van Beek
Andrea van Beek studied classical singing at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. She has sung in choirs including the Collegium Vocale Gent, Amsterdam Baroque Choir and, since 1999, in Cappella Amsterdam. She has worked on many musical theatre productions with contemporary music, including recently ‘Psalm 151’ by Boudewijn Tarenskeen. 

She also teaches singing for the acting course at the HKU University of the Arts Utrecht and gives workshops for arts organization Buitenkunst. 

She likes to work in a wide variety of locations and to combine different musical styles. The production DUETS WITH JIM is the most important production she has been involved in to date – a monument to her son.

Newton | Amsterdam 


Newton | Amsterdam is a music theatre company with a focus on contemporary repertoire. It operates internationally with new productions in the spaces between opera, music theatre and performance art. The artistic leaders are stage director Xander Straat and musician Gareth Davis.

 

Gareth Davis

With a particular talent for improvisation, Gareth made his debut at the age of 18 at Wigmore Hall, London. He has worked closely with the most diverse musicians – for example improvisation band Oiseaux-Tempête and electronic artists such as Scanner and Merzbow. He has also played with orchestras and ensembles such as the Philharmonia Orchestra, Neue Vocalsolisten and Orquesta de Madrid. 

 

Xander Straat

Xander Straat directs opera, musical theatre and theatre, makes radio drama (Prix Italia 2005), as well as performing and proving to have a flair for program-making with his direction of TEDx Amsterdam 2014. Following an inspirational cooperation as an actor with street orchestra the Ricciotti Ensemble, he dedicated himself completely to his love of musical theatre. He has directed for The Dutch National Touring Opera and Grachtenfestival, among others. 

 

Yaron Abulafia

Lighting designer Yaron Abulafia is the author of the authoritative book ‘The Art of Light on Stage’ (2015). He has designed the lighting for more than 200 productions, concerts and TV shows worldwide, and worked with Staatsballett Berlin, the English National Ballet and closer to home the Nederlands Dans Theater.

 

Ron Ford

American composer Ron Ford has composed for a wide range of orchestras and ensembles, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, The Radio Filharmonisch Orkest and Slagwerk Den Haag. He spent twenty years as the musical director for Dutch radio station Radio 4.

 

Morris Kliphuis

Morris Kliphuis is a hornist and composer. With his band Kapok, he has won numerous awards, including an Edison in 2015. He has also played in the Kyteman Orchestra. Morris likes to work with improvisation, grooves and clear melodies.

 

Gábor Tarján

Gábor Tarján is a composer, percussionist and musical director of theatre group Het Filiaal. He composes for theatre and film, as well as for the concert hall. His compositions range from grand through sensitive to intimate. His music has been performed by Insomnio, the DoelenEnsemble , Arraymusic and the Icelandic Duo Harpverk. 

 

Jacob ter Veldhuis

Jacob ter Veldhuis is known for his melodious compositions, both pleasing on the ear and not afraid to create an effect. Music that builds bridges between high art and low culture. JacobTV, as he his known in the USA, is a frequently played composer worldwide. In 2016, he received the BUMA Classical Award.

 

Huba de Graaff

Huba de Graaff makes anything but polished music: she presents her experimental music in both acoustic and electronic forms. Her works include Apera, Pornopera and Lautsprecher Arnolt. The common thread throughout De Graaff’s work is her search for the essence of sound and the origins of language and song.
